Tell me about the Louis Vuitton brand

Founded in 1854 by French fashion designer and businessman Louis Vuitton, the brand became famous in the late 19th century for making leather trunks and luggage.

As the brand grew in popularity and opened its first London store in 1885 on Oxford Street, people began to imitate the Louis Vuitton style and the Damier Canvas pattern was born in 1888– the instantly recognisable monogram we all know today

Contrary to what most people think, the Damier Canvas was the first trademark registered by Louis Vuitton. It wasn’t until 1896, that the famous LV Monogram Canvas was registered. An instant success for Louis Vuitton and to this day a signature look of the brand.

What are the most popular Louis Vuitton bags?

Over the years Louis Vuitton has introduced many styles of bags, some of which have become cemented in fashion history. These include:

The Speedy

Created in 1930, this small top handle bag remains a firm fashion favourite. Adorned with the iconic Monogram canvas, this bag is functional yet feminine.

The Keepall

Designed in 1930, this is a soft-sided travel bag in the famous monogram pattern. The supple design is functional, flexible, and light, making it the perfect travel companion.

The Alma

Inspired by a 1934 Squire Bag by Gaston Vuitton, this was designed in 1992. A timeless LV icon, this handbag is ideal for everyday wear.

The Steamer

This is a smaller piece of luggage designed in 1901 to fit inside a trunk. It was inspired by historic LV luggage and restyled for the modern day by Nicolas Ghesquière.

The Noe Bag

Originally designed in 1932, this relaxed design was created to transport bottles of Champagne in style. This is one of the legendary pieces of the house and features a leather drawstring.

The Lockit

A top handle bag from 1958 that was re-invented in 2014, this bag has twin handles and a zip fastening. The name was given to the bag due to the padlock featured at the side.

The Papillon

A small cylindrical bag designed in 1966 translated to English as 'Butterfly'. This bag was designed by Henri Racamier, the husband of Louis Vuitton's great-granddaughter.
